Best Sunset Sail in the Outer Banks!

Katherine and Dan are amazing! Me and the kids surprised my wife for her birthday last night with a sunset cruise and it couldn't be better! They even decorated the cabin with Happy Birthday decorations and Katherine picked flowers from her garden for my wife. We all got to take turns at the wheel and the conversations were perfect. Definitely recommend!

This was an excellent experience with Katherine and Dan. We loved that it was a private sunset sailing cruise and we were able to bring wine and food! Dan, who is a great storyteller with a good sense of humor also made the trip special. Katherine is also a licensed Captain and she grew up sailing so they are both very experienced. Dan had me 'sailing' for a good part of the cruise which made the experience even better. The trip was with my husband and another couple of our friends. Had the joy of seeing several dolphins swimming alongside the boat toward the end!!

We took this tour on our last evening in OBX and it was the highlight of our trip. Even my husband who is stingy with compliments gushed about it. Katherine and Dan are such pleasant hosts and went out of their way to allow us to see some dolphin. We learned a little about sailing and I even got to take the helm for a while. This was a serene sunset sail in the sound (not the ocean) and while the sunset was unremarkable, the experience was anything but. Book this tour - you will not regret it!

Dan and Katherine were beyond wonderful! They worked with my boyfriend to orchestrate a breathtaking proposal experience. They offered to take photographs in the most beautiful locations, and were so genuine and sweet in offering their congratulations, well wishes, and flowers. After an educational experience, learning about the historical landmarks along the journey from Katherine, Captain Dan sailed us to beautiful scenic views along the water and coasted on our return so we could watch dolphins frolic under the setting sun. It was a breathtaking and unforgettable experience. I could not recommend this more!

The Most Memorable Part of Our Vacation!

What a treat! Dan and Katherine are the boat's proud owners, and their love of the boat and the ocean is palpable. The boat is meticulously maintained and is very comfortable. We were able to take turns holding the wheel and navigating, which was a lot of fun. We even came across a pod of dolphins, and Dan deftly navigated to keep us alongside them as long as we could. Sailing at sunset was magical, and we will be back for sure!

Dan and Katherine took my family and friends on a 2-1/2 hour Sunset Sail in the Sound. Our two little dogs joined and had a great time as well. They gave us some sailing tips and let us steer the helm. It was a gorgeous day and we had the best experience. Thank you both so much!

It was a wonderful experience!! Very relaxing! I was nervous at first; didn't know what to expect, but you both, Katherine and Dan, made our experience a memorable one! Your knowledgeable answers and years of experience calmed my nerves. My son said it was the best thing we did on vacation! That says a lot coming from a 16 yr old. I really appreciate Dan's patience in answering my son's many, many questions and for allowing him to have a hands-on experience at sailing. My hubby and I are most grateful. Katherine and Dan are very gracious hosts and ensured a truly spectacular experience. They were open to giving us our pirvacy if we wished or teaching us the basics of sailing if interested. This is the perfect charter for a special occasion or just to have a memorable experience above and beyond what the traditional group charters provide. This was the perfect ending to our annual family reunion week and we plan to make it part of our annual tradition. Thanks again Katherine and Dan!

The Best OBX Experience!

I cannot rave about this experience enough! My family sailed with Dan and Katherine on the last night of our vacation and we all agreed it was our favorite part. Not only were Dan and Katherine incredibly kind, friendly, and fun to spend time with, but the boat was lovely and we loved seeing the sunset from the water. We also got incredibly lucky and saw a group of dolphins towrd the end of the sail which was the icing on the cake! We already are planning to do another sail next year (it's our new favorite tradition!)

We took my boyfriend's mom on a private sunset sail to celebrate her 80th birthday (also her first sail). Dan and Katherine were great hosts! The boat is beautiful, and the sail was wonderful. They even got my boyfriend's mom a card and flowers for her birthday! And they welcomed our dog.

A Must Do in the OBX

We have visited the OBX before but this time we brought our best friends on this trip. Planned the long weekend to conclude with a private sail. We could not have asked for a better way to end this great weekend. Katherine and Dan were magnificent, welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and had wonderful stories of boats, Manteo, the surrounding islands and more. We brought on our little cooler with wine and beer and just relaxed. We will be visiting the OBX again next year and our visit will include another sail with them. Thankful they shared their treasure with us and happy they ordered up the perfect sunset as a bonus.

Four of us went on a private cruise. It was wonderful! So peaceful!! Dan and Katherine were the perfect hosts. Giving us our privacy but also available for questions and conversation. One of us was celebrating her birthday and Katherine went above and beyond to help us celebrate. If you want to spend an amazing 2.5 hours out on the water this is the cruise to pick. Highly recommend and definitely 5 stars!

The Perfect Evening

What a perfect evening! I booked a private sunset sail for my husband and myself, and Dan and Katherine were amazing hosts/captains. They made us feel at home, provided some lovely conversation and tidbits about the area, and let us both take a turn at being 'captain'. I can't say enough about this experience, it was the highlight of our week at the Outer Banks.

Look no further for an incredible sailing trip! Dan and Katherine were amazing hosts, storytellers, and sailors. We felt like we were in good hands the whole time. The tour was the perfect amount of time (roughly 2.5 hours), and set in a great area to see the sunset. Everyone also got to take the wheel for a bit and learn some sailing, roam around the boat, and take lots of nice pictures. Great for families and dog friendly too! Our puppy certainly had a great time.

Our daughter surprised us with this magical cruise for our 75th birthdays. A month earlier, she had conversations with Katherine, who was gracious and looking forward to hosting us. Both she and her husband, Dan, are licensed boat captains, BTW. We were warmly greeted, treated to a wonderful sail with ample time for both daughter Lauren and I to take the helm. Even saw two dolphins that came up close by the boat, as if to say hello. A good 2 and a half hours later, we were back at the dock feeling joyful and grateful for the experience. They could not have been nicer or more relaxed, allowing us to fully enjoy the evening together. As a final grace note, Katherine presented us with a flower bouquet she picked from her own garden. The sail was, without doubt, the highlight of our weeklong stay on Nags Head! Thank you so much, Katherine and Dan. We will always remember this special moment on a very special birthday!

My husband, 22 year old son, 18 year old daughter, and I took my parents on this sunset sail for my Mother's 80th birthday. We all had a fabulous evening. Our kids said that it was their favorite night of our trip and my parents raved about the experience. Dan and Katherine are wonderful. They are so friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. It was an amazing experience for all of us. The Sea'Scape is well maintained and very comfortable. Our trip was so relaxing and the sunset was beautiful. Both my husband and son took turns as captain while we were out sailing. The sound was calm and there was a lot to see. We would definitely recommend this tour!

It was simply wonderful being on the water with Captain Dan on his beautifully appointed sail boat. He calmly sailed the waters in the Sound, told us a bit about the area and its history, and knew just when to share a story and when to let his guests just enjoy the experience.

Katherine and Dan are so wonderful and I'd love the opportunity to sail with them again soon. My friends and I did a sunset sail and enjoyed every part of the trip - they gave great instructions to find the boat. Captain Dan pointed out some OBX attractions from the water, having some drinks and snacks at the front of the boat and of course watching a spectacular sunset.

Husband and wife, both captains and both were excellent hosts for our sailing trip in the sound. This was our son's family's first such sailing experience and what a first it was! Captain Dan allowed my grandsons, ages 6 and 9, to be 'Captain' and sail the boat... All the while explaining what to do in a friendly and educational manner. Captain Katherine entertained all the guests extremely pleasantly when she was not assisting Captain Dan pilot. And dozens of dolphins joined in the fun filled evening playing and showing off for all of our enjoyment. This is a MUST experience if you are in the Outer Banks of NC!

Sailing with Dan and Katherine was a wonderful experience. Dan knows the area really well, and he knows how to sail. His wife Katherine makes the experience extra special. We felt like we were family. We learned so much, and this sailing cruise was one of the best highlights of our visit to the Outer Banks. I have been on these waters my whole life but sailing with Capt Dan and Katherine was a great time. My girlfriend had company from PA and booked a sunset trip, just like we did last year. Expert sailors and the most gracious hosts. Fun to talk with and enjoy a beautiful sailing trip, Capt Dan may even let you take the wheel. I cannot recommend this experience enough!!!

This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we were anxious to end our trip with a boat outing on the water. It was a lovely Friday evening in early May when we set sail with Dan and Katherine aboard their beautiful 41 foot boat. Katherine and Dan made it a memorable evening. Their southern hospitality and warmth made us feel very comfortable, like ya'll were old friends. Katherine and Dan are very knowledgeable about the area and welcomed our questions. I recently took my two sisters and my two nieces on a sunset sailing cruise with this company and we had the best time. The captains were very sweet and even allowed us to cut up the watermelon in their galley! They even allowed us to use the sails and steer the boat!

My wife and I have had the pleasure of going on a sunset tour with Captain Dan and Katherine. It has been a particularly rough year and this 2 hour escape melted away the stress. They treated us like we were the first ones to ever board their beautiful boat. An Unforgettable Sunset Sail

My wife and I sailed the sunset cruise with Katherine and Dan last night. To say that it was perfect is an understatement. Katherine and Dan shared their boat, their experience and kept great conversation. We felt as if we were hanging out with friends we hadn't seen in some time. The boat is beautiful and well kept. As we sailed, Katherine told us a little about the area, and showed us where we would be sailing. After a while, Dan let me take the wheel. What a great experience. It was one of the most peaceful things I've done in a while, the whole experience actually seemed longer than it was. As we made our way back to the slip, we saw one of the most beautiful sunsets. Being on the water just seems to make everything better. We highly recommend Sail the Outer Banks with Katherine and Dan. I can see us making this a yearly ritual when we are visiting the Outer Banks.

Dan and Katherine were great. Beautiful sail boat and we felt like we were sailing with old friends. It was so nice when the sails were up and no engine and you just hear the boat gliding across the water. We've chartered sail boats in Mexico and Hawaii, but this was the best experience. Dan let me drive the boat which was very cool. Reserve this early before they are booked. Look forward to returning to the Outer Banks and sailing again with Dan and Katherine. I genuinely cannot imagine a more delightful evening. Dan and Katherine are such engaging hosts, so attuned to our comfort and enjoyment. Their knowledge of the area and willingness to share stories about the location were a most pleasant enhancement. The boat is beautiful, the accommodations so comfortable, the experience so completely enjoyable, we just can't wait to do it again. We did a sunset sail with Captains Dan and Katherine. It was perfect for our party of 6. My parents appointed me activity director this year and after 31 years of traveling to the OBX annually, I wanted something different and something we would NEVER forget. Every single good review you see here is 1000% accurate. This trip inspired one of our friends and I to take sailing lessons when we return to Maryland. Dan had some of us actually steering the boat and Katherine was an outstanding host. She even picked us a bundle of fresh herbs from the garden as a welcome gift. We will definitely do future sunset cruises with Dan and Katherine and recommend to EVERYONE we know that travels to the OBX. Thank you to the best HOSTS ever. As part of our couples vacation, we decided to do private sunset sail with Katherine and Dan. However, little did we know how amazing the experience would be! Katherine warmly greeted us at the pier and welcomed us onto their lovely boat. After a tour and explanation of the trip, we set sail on what turned out to be the best evening of our trip. Dan and Katherine are very knowledgeable and passed on their love for sailing onto us in just a few hours. It was exciting, relaxing, and romantic at the same time! I would highly recommend sailing with Katherine and Dan, and can't wait to sail with them again.

We did a sunset sail with Katherine and Dan. We were a family of four with two teens. Katherine and Dan are great hosts. We saw a ton of dolphins -- which they said can be hit or miss. It was a beautiful evening and we experienced an awesome sunset. It passed a major test as our two teens stayed off their phones for much of the time. That was in part due to it being a new experience and in part due to the nice way of Katherine and Dan make it an enjoyable time -- sharing as much information as you want but not pushing it on your. Highly recommended!

I went on the evening sail ride with my family and it was so nice! The views were amazing and Katherine and Dan were fun to be around. They let my siblings and I sail the boat and Katherine even pulled out fun hats to wear! Overall there were a great team and it was nice to just have the family sail for a few hours on the water:)
Super "Mystery" Surprise

I took my family on a "mystery" ride to the dock at Manteo. They had no idea what we were doing for the evening except that we had purchased picnic food. The sailboat cruise was a total surprise for them. Dan and Katherine were excellent hosts and sailors. They were able to pull my 19 year old out of his mental aggravation about having to deal with a "surprise" which he thought was going to be a "stupid bluegrass concert". He was surprised for sure and really enjoyed the whole experience. We definitely recommend getting out on the cruise, feeling the wonderful breeze, watching the sunset, and becoming friends with Dan and Katherine.

Katherine and Dan were a first class team. Their boat is beautiful and they were graceful and knowledgeable hosts. The sailing was amazing, and the sunset was one of the most beautiful of my life. It is hard to put into words how relaxing it was to be on deck, hearing the wind and water. Dan and Katherine encouraged me to steer and invested the time to teach along the way. I got the impression that they really make the experience what the guest is looking for. We were looking for quiet, romantic and relaxing and they nailed it! I am glad we saved it until the end of this wonderful vacation because it would have been hard to top the experience. A perfect anniversary trip!

My family and I did the Sunset Sail on the boat "Sea'Scape" with Dan and Katherine. We got a personal small boat/small group experience and a real taste of authentic Outer Banks sailing.. all of us were allowed to pilot (steer) the boat - with supervision of course. My son said this was his best-ever Outer Banks experience, and we have been going there for over 30 years! All the kids, who are thirty and over, came away wanting to buy a boat! As a bonus, the town of Manteo is charming, with lots of small shops and restaurants. This is a must-do activity!

I had initially purchased a private sailing tour for my dad as it was to be his last sail due to his age of 86. Sadly he fell and broke part of his spine so he was not able to make the trip. He did get to watch us sail out of the harbor which was hard on him since he is an old salt sailor and was looking forward to this for months!!
Owners Capt Dan and Capt Katherine were amazing. Very knowledgeable at what they do and did everything to make us feel comfortable and made this trip an overall fantastic day. My new son-in-law had never sailed and he and my daughter both took turns at the helm. The wind was at our backs and the sails billowed majestically as the boat slipped quickly through the water, even getting up to 7 knots which is fast.
The day was a peaceful calming adventure for us all. I very much enjoyed laying on the bow (front of the boat) flat as we tacked, which is when the sails move from one side to the other which meant they passed over me. It was a unique experience and I will admit that I couldn't help myself, each time giggling and squealing with joy.
If you have never sailed and want to experience it.. go with Dan and Katherine.
If you have sailed but want to do it again.. go with Dan and Katherine.
Thank you to both of them for giving us a fantastic day on the water. My Dad has enjoyed all the footage and photos we took that day and he is living the experience through us..... not what he envisioned but he knows he couldn't have joined us due to the severe injury he is recovering from.

We went on a sunset sail with Captain Dan and Captain Katherine for our last night in the Outer Banks. We are a family of 5 with children ages 23, 13, and 8. The Captains were very attentive with our kids and made us feel at home on their beautiful boat. I was in awe of how well they both knew "the ropes" and worked together like a fine oiled machine. They work hard to make your experience memorable. Such sweet people!

Captain Dan and Captain Katherine provided the best experience ever for a three hour tour around Roanoke Island. They did everything they could for my wife and I to get great pictures and to put us at ease. It was a thoroughly relaxing tour that felt more like being on the water with long time friends. Mary and I will be back as soon as we can. This was a great couples experience and we loved hearing the stories of their past cruises on the Sea'Scape. By the way: The Sea'Scape is a fine sailboat, very stable and easy to maneuver around. Mary and I can't say enough good things about Dan, Katherine, the Sea'Scape, and our experience. If you are in the Outer Banks area, do not pass this up! It was easy to schedule, easy to find, and easy to settle up via cc. (right on the boat!) If you are a couple, a family, or friends that want a relaxing experience on the water, "Sail the Outer Banks" is what you want!

My sister and I went on the boat together and it was WONDERFUL. Katherine and Dan are wonderful hosts and captains! The weather was perfect and the sunset beautiful. It is so peaceful to be sailing out on the water it is the perfect activity for couples, friends, family... anyone really!! Would be great for special occasions or just something to make a great memory! Treat yourself and take this trip!!!

Dan and Katherine were fabulous hosts! They were very warm and inviting, and seemed like dear old friends! The Sea'Scape is a very comfortable and nimble vessel, our ride was both peaceful and exhilarating! You won't find a better sailing trip!

My closest friend booked this tour as my Christmas present last year. Ten months later (and a hurricane approaching) Katherine and Dan took us out. The weather didn't give us the sunset we had hoped for however Dan and Katherine made up for it. We both got to take the wheel and learned so much about sailing. They both took the time to explain the sail boat and the area. As we were leaving the dock, surrounding boaters looked at us like we were crazy and I am so thrilled we went out anyway. The customer service from these two was incredible. Prompt and spot on! We had brought a bottle of wine and a cheese plate and Kathering made sure we enjoyed it on the boat! A must do in the area!

The sunset cruise was everything we expected and more!!!! Dan and Katherine make you feel welcome and at home the moment you set foot on the boat. They are both licensed captains who know the area inside out and share their knowledge with you during the trip. We were able to help pilot the boat and I spent about an hour behind the wheel. The sailing excursion was both relaxing and exciting, will be back for another cruise next year.....

And you can't beat the beautiful views and the smell of the salt air! If you are visiting the Outer Banks, make a trip to Manteo to enjoy their hospitality on this gorgeous sailboat - you won't be disappointed!

Our private sail was a family affair - my husband, my two adult daughters, my 87-year-old mother, and me. On the way home at the end of our vacation, it was unanimous that this was by far our favorite activity of the entire trip. None of us had sailed before, but we were immediately put at ease by the warm and friendly welcome we received from Dan and Katherine. They were the perfect hosts -- making sure that each of us was comfortable and that we were doing just what we wanted to be doing. My mom stayed in the area near the wheel since she couldn't easily get around, and Katherine and Dan took excellent care of her. The rest of us moved around the boat at will, and even had the option to captain the boat if we chose. (Husband and daughter did) By the time we were done it was like we were a family of 7 instead of 5! And the cruise itself was gorgeous -- the weather perfect, a sunset to die for, a ton of dolphin entertaining us, and a beautiful, easy sail through the sound. I am so glad that we chose to sail with Dan and Katherine, it was the perfect evening!

I booked a sunset sail as a surprise for my boyfriend on our first trip ever to the Outer Banks - this was our absolute favorite part of the trip! We were able to bring food and drinks on board which was a great plus. Dan and Katherine were SO genuine and helpful - we felt comfortable immediately. The weather was perfect and the views truly left us breathless. It was romantic! We highly recommend sailing with them and we cannot wait to come back!

I booked a private sailing for my girlfriend and me as I wanted to surprise her with something special. I was a bit concerned because I had not sailed before but it was smooth and Katherine and Dan made us feel very comfortable and are a great source of information; it was as if we were sailing with friends. Dan even allowed us to take turns navigating and took pictures of us with the sunset as background. We asked Katherine to recommend us a good restaurant in Manteo and the one she suggested was great. This was one of the highlights of our first visit to the Outer Banks!

We began a tour through the whole vessel, which is a gorgeous 1974 sailboat fully equipped with galley, bedrooms, two heads (of course), and the owners, Dan & Katherine, who are both licensed captains who know the sound inside out. They shared piloting the boat with us and I spent about a half hour behind the wheel myself. I have always loved boats and being on the water with the wind at your back! These two and their boat, The Sea'Scape, made our vacation go way beyond expectations. I have sailed 3 times, and none of them came close to the wonderful experience that Dan and Katherine so graciously shared with us on their sunset cruise!

Our family sailed with Dan & Katherine. They were both knowledgeable and made my family feel very welcome. The duration of the sail was a decent amount of time and as an added bonus everyone enjoyed seeing a family of dolphin diving into the sunset. Dan and Katherine were very welcoming and shared their knowledge of the Outer Banks of sailing and navigating the waterways. We were fortunate to have an absolutely gorgeous day. They openly shared their boat and offered to let us help with the sailing of their sailboat. Dan also let me take the helm. The highlight was the two pods of dolphins, including a baby, that surrounded the boat! We enjoyed our sail so much, as well as the graciousness of Katherine and Dan. Dan and Katherine were amazing co-conspirators for my surprise engagement. The graciously helped plan and execute my sunset engagement for my now fiance. The weather was supposed to be bad and they kept me updated regarding the status of the trip the entire day. When we arrived I was stunned by their friendliness. They gave us a tour of the boat and kept my fiance busy while I prepared for the engagement. During the proposal they secretly took photos to capture the moment for us. They even gave my fiance flowers. Highly recommend!

Katherine and Dan were wonderful; they explained where we were sailing and sailed past an osprey nest. The yacht is a beauty and wonderfully maintained. Katherine provided plates and glasses and kept the champagne on ice. The stories were fun. The sunset was just beautiful and my pictures are memorable. This is a true treat and a bargain for the experience. We sailed for three hours and they really listened to what was desired. A lifetime memory created with care and attention to detail and love. Perfect.

The sailing excursion was both relaxing and exciting, plus being very informative. We learned about the type of boat and it's parts, the waters we traveled through, and other information about the area. My wife was allowed to steer for a while. We spent a nice Saturday afternoon on the water.

It was our 20th anniversary and my husband kept me in suspense until we arrived at the dock and met Dan and Katherine. What a surprise! He booked a back to back sailing tour for just the two of us to come back at sunset. We had been on a sailboat 20 years ago on our honeymoon and this excursion was perfect. Dan and Katherine were excellent hosts and asked us what we wanted to do. It was up to us how hands on we wanted to be. Dan taught us how to steer at the correct angles to the wind to get the maximum speed and after a while my husband had the boat close to 7 knots and heeled over almost to the rail! We are not sailors but we love the water and this was a whole lot of fun! We brought a picnic and had it on the boat and enjoyed our conversations and the day. The scenery was beautiful, the owners were gracious, knowledgeable, and down to earth. If you are looking to do something different, this was both relaxing, exhilarating, and a beautiful way to enjoy the afternoon. It will be the kind of trip you want it to be, just let them know how you want to spend the day and they'll make it happen. Highly recommend and we will return!

My sisters and I enjoyed a sunset cruise hosted by Katherine and Dan on their gorgeous sailboat SeaScape. They showed us the sites around Manteo and were very informative about sailing in the Sound. We were SO lucky to have experienced a bonus 'Dolphin Encounter" with them... Upwards of 20 Dolphins swam alongside and entertained us for over an hour! Dan and Katherine were excellent hosts. We felt like we were sailing with friends, not someone we had just met. I encourage you to look them up next time you are in the OBX!

This was our first experience on a sailboat. Dan and Katherine were very welcoming and informative in the ways of sailing and navigating the waterways. We were fortunate to have a beautiful evening, and they offered to let us help with the workings of the sailboat. One of our group actually piloted the ship with the help of Dan! The highlight was the dolphins, including a baby, that surrounded the boat, and Katherine and Dan stayed out longer so we could enjoy that experience. Our family of 5 (kids age 15, 12, 10) were hosted by Katherine and Dan on their beautiful sailboat SeaScape for a sunset sail. We enjoyed eating our dinner on the gunwale while taking in the scenery and the fresh saltwater air while learning about the sailboat, sailing, and the sights of the sound. We each had a turn at the wheel driving the boat. During sunset we saw a couple of bottle nose dolphins which was a real treat. Katherine and Dan are wonderful hosts. We enjoyed their company and loved having them share their time with us. This was truly a magnificent highlight of our trip.

My family of 6 adults took a sunset sail with Captains Katherine and Dan on their 41 year old 41 ft sailboat in the sound between Roanoke Island and Nags Head. We had a great time and look forward to going out with them again on our next visit. Initially I emailed the week before to find out what evenings were available and Katherine answered me right away. I then called and made a reservation. The day before the sail, I received a reminder email. The process could not be easier. The sail was relaxing, informative, and educational. Two of us took the helm for awhile under Dan's watchful eye. That was a highlight for me. I've been out on sailboats of varying sizes from a small sunfish to a large clipper and it's always a thrill to be on the water under sail. Thank you Captains for providing this great experience!

We had a relaxing cruise and the kids were able to actively participate. We happened to see a lot of dolphin this particular evening. Dan was patient and knowledgeable. We have vacationed in OBX for many years, but this was our first sail tour. We considered other outfits through some of the rental and reservation sites we were familiar with in the area, however decided to book this tour due to great reviews, truly private charter, and affordable price. My family of four chartered a Saturday tour with Katherine and Dan. They were exceptional hosts. They both directly engaged with my kids (8 and 5) from the moment of introductions and got them excited for the sail. Katherine took us on a quick tour of the boat and we were off. The kids had a great time each taking turns driving the boat with Dan while the adults enjoyed the ride on the bow. Once that exhausted their attention, Katherine took them below to work on crafts. With Katherine below with the kids, Dan asked for help piloting the boat while we to full sail and from that point on I was driving the boat getting tips and instruction from Dan until we got back to the inlet. It was a great trip that the whole family enjoyed and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a sail adventure in OBX. We look forward to a sunset sail on our next vacation with Katherine and Dan.

Katherine and Dan provided a marvelous sunset cruise for myself and our family. Both Captains are knowledgeable about the area while providing so many interesting stories about the boat and themselves. Our family of 6 and our dog Rex truly enjoyed this first class sailing experience. Dan and Katherine are accommodating hosts, and they are very friendly. They both gave very informative rundowns on the trip itself, the mechanics of sailing, and the island/sound. Everyone aboard had the opportunity to take the wheel under Dan's guidance. My family was in the Outer Banks for a wedding. We came down for a short weekend and I booked the sailing trip as a graduation present for my boyfriend. We had no idea what to expect, but we WERE NOT disappointed! Katherine and Dan were fabulous hosts and captains! We boarded the ship, were given a quick tour and brief history, and set sail! They allowed us to treat the boat as if it were our own. We brought a cooler, played music and even ate lunch while sailing. The 6 of us were completely comfortable. They provided us with cushions and explained the entire sailing experience while we relaxed and rode along. Each of us were able to captain the boat, if we wanted, and they were kind enough to take plenty of photos of my family! I definitely recommend their sailing experience as a day outing!

It was a beautiful day with a gentle breeze taking the ketch up to almost 6 knots on a reach. My son and I took our turns at the helm brought back fond memories of years ago. We reserved SeaScape for a sunset cruise the evening of my girlfriend's birthday - six of us plus Katherine and Dan (crew). Ship was easy to find and both Katherine and Dan were wonderful hosts. It's a completely private and customized experience. They are expert sailors and really tailor the experience to you and your wishes. The views are gorgeous, especially at sunset, and you can get some real 'hands on' experience if that is your thing, too. We learned a lot, enjoyed some wine and snacks (you can bring your own) while on our sail. Great hosts, beautiful scenery, lifetime memory. Highly recommend this to anyone near Roanoke Island, it's well worth it!!

My girlfriend chartered 'Sail the Outer Banks' for my birthday. As the date approached the forecast wasn't promising. Katherine got in touch with us and discussed alternatives should the weather be bad. Fortunately, the forecast was wrong and the weather was perfect! Katherine and Dan were excellent hosts and did everything they could to make our trip special... including decorating for my birthday! We both even got to steer the boat! It was a great time and I highly recommend this sailing adventure to anyone.

Making the reservation was very easy. Katherine responded to my email immediately and was very friendly. Prior to our trip, she provided great details and answered all our questions. The trip itself was truly memorable. This was the first time my parents and I had been on a sailboat. Katherine and Dan explained what they were doing, how things worked, and even let each of us have a turn steering the boat. It was great fun!

I had been planning to propose to my girlfriend at the top of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse on one of their night climbs in front of the 'Super Moon' to culminate our weekend in the Outer Banks. I had also come across Sail the Outer Banks and thought a sunset cruise would be a great thing to do on Friday to kick off the weekend. We got into the area on Thursday, and Friday afternoon visited the Bodie Island Lighthouse. As it turns out my (now) fiancée is 'super' afraid of heights!!!! So much for Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. I had to save the weekend somehow and sent a quick email to Katherine that I might propose on the boat later that Friday evening. I told my fiancée that we were gonna have a picnic along the wharf and the sailboat trip was a complete surprise to her! We brought along some picnic food and wine, and really had a blast. Katherine even put together a nice flower bouquet from her own garden. When the time came, my fiancée and I were relaxing on the bow of the boat with some wine, and I asked Dan if he could come take a picture of us. I got on my knee and the rest is...on Facebook!!

I had friends visiting from out of state and we decided to do an afternoon sailing excursion on the Sea'Scape. I highly recommend this to visitors and locals alike. It's a fantastic value for three hours of sailing (on your own private, skippered sailboat!) The boat is large and comfortable (and yes ladies, it has bathrooms!). Katherine and Dan are very knowledgeable and easygoing. I'd definitely like to do this again.

Our family of four was looking forward to this evening sail and EVERYONE came away happy. Rare. The boat is lovely, Dan and Katherine are professional and warm, accommodating and knowledgeable. We were giddy during our picnic dinner and then dessert while sitting on the bow watching the sun rays beam onto the water. Grownups were able to have some adult conversation and gain some knowledge of sailing and of the area. The kids explored, steered the boat, did crafts, and didn't want to leave! We all felt spoiled. What a fantastic way to spend an evening in the OBX. My family and I have been coming to the Outer Banks for years but have never been out on the water. On a whim we decided that this year we would try to book a sailing trip and are so glad we did! Katherine and Dan were so warm and welcoming and incredibly knowledgeable and professional. We brought our dinner with us, enjoyed a glass of wine, and totally relaxed. I would highly recommend booking a trip with Katherine and Dan if you're coming to the Outer Banks - it was a lovely intimate way to get out on the water and kick back for a few hours.

What a great way to spend a few hours of our vacation! We arrived a few minutes early and Dan and Katherine were just finishing the preparations for our sail. The three of us (myself, the missus, and our beagle Teufel) were warmly welcomed aboard and after we were underway, Dan and Katherine told us we were welcome to roam around the boat as we pleased, they were both very knowledgeable about the local area and wildlife which made for an interesting trip.
I sat forward for a good part of the trip taking photos and enjoying the scenery while my wife and Teufel stayed in the cabin for the most part. I took a turn at the helm which was really enjoyable and Katherine and Dan were very accommodating - basically, the trip was ours to do whatever we wanted! The weather was gorgeous and we had a great time!

We had the pleasure of taking the inaugural sail of the new season with captains Dan and Katherine. The weather was chilly but it certainly did not put a damper on the thrill of being our first time to sail in the new season. Katherine and Dan know a lot about sailing and are very accommodating. We were sent by our family and friends on an incredible trip!!! Dan & Katherine gave us an awesome start to a mini-honeymoon. I had booked the sunset sail as one of the activities for our family trip to OBX and got more than I expected, Dan and Katherine are fantastic. Katherine communicated with me for all the bookings and was very prompt with her responses. On the day of the sail, we set out at the time we had decided on, Dan and Katherine made us feel very comfortable, it was just the four of us and them. It was one amazing evening at sea and Dan let everyone at the helm. Katherine helped us with the drinks and she kept my daughters busy with some crafts when they had enough of the sea. Dan gave us the insights of the area as well as about sailing, overall it was worth it, would definitely recommend.

I contacted Dan and Katherine to charter their boat with plans on proposing to my girlfriend. Katherine responded right away, communicated with me often when I had concerns about the weather, and made it a perfect trip when I finally popped the question! She brought us drinks and snacks while we sat on the bow, and we even got to steer the boat. Both Dan and Katherine were very friendly and gave us a history of the surrounding waters and answered all of our questions we threw at them. Thanks for a very memorable experience!

Our family had a delightful sunset cruise with Captain Dan and Katherine aboard their 41 ft sailboat in the Albemarle Sound out of Manteo, NC. Our family was able to connect with the sea and winds while we toured the sound on our 3 hour sunset cruise. We were encouraged to try our hand at the helm, with Captain Dan expertly guiding us in coming about. Katherine filled us in on the local history and pointed out the beautiful vistas and birdlife we passed by. We highly recommend this experience!

I wanted to surprise my husband with a private sunset sail for our 41st Anniversary and from the first contact with Katherine, I knew it was going to be perfect! I came to the Outer Banks for the first time and looked for something different for boating, aside from jet skiing or charter boats. I found 'Sail the Outer Banks', and from the moment I stepped aboard and met the charming couple that takes you sailing I could not have been more pleased. They were more than accommodating to our party of 6. This was a surprise trip for my boyfriend's 28th birthday, and it truly became a special day. From letting us sail, stopping and allowing us to take a dip in the sound, and answering any and all questions we may have, I strongly recommend this tour. Katherine and Dan were excellent hosts and the boat is beautiful. Whether you have a party of younger adults such as mine, or a family with children, you will enjoy an excellent outing with great company and an extremely reasonable price.

We went on this adventure with our family which includes 3 children. Dan and Katherine were great with the kids and let each of them at the helm. We didn't have the best weather, but made the best of our 'cruise'. We were able to see dolphins and Captain Dan went out of his way to make sure we saw them as much as possible, circling around them for almost 20 minutes. We aren't sailors, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I think this was a 5 star experience. I'd definitely recommend Sail the Outer Banks! Top notch!

We have sailed on larger schooners out of the New England area so we decided to sail the OBX with Captain Dan and Katherine (who also is a captain) on the 41' Gulfstar with our friends. We felt the price was worth having the opportunity to share the experience of sailing in a personal setting versus being just another paying passenger. So we emailed about 2 weeks prior to our vacation only to find out they were fully booked but Katherine said they would keep our information in the event of a cancellation. Four days prior to our vacation Katherine emailed they had a cancellation and we were now booked.
Wow what a great time. While making our way across the sound my friend said 'he wasn't sure if he would enjoy the sail but this is great'. Our wives remained in the cockpit with Dan, while we sat up front on the bow with Katherine. As we sailed we were asked if we would like to take the wheel. How can you say no to having the chance holding the wheel and staying the course as the wind fills the sail of a 41' boat while the spray occasionally splashes up and cools you off.
My wife loved the sail and especially heeling. As we had a very brisk breeze and were traveling 4-6 knots, our Captains assured us that the boat's 8,000 pounds of ballast in the keel would keep us from tipping.
This was the highlight of our trip and if you are planning a vacation to OBX take the time to sail with Dan & Katherine.

My wife booked this for me as a birthday gift. We couldn't have asked for a better time. Dan and Katherine were both great hosts and a wealth of local knowledge. The small setting made it even more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in seeing a different side of the Outer Banks along with some of the local pelicans, dolphins, and osprey.

Dan and Katherine gave us an amazing experience! We booked this tour for my boyfriend's birthday and chose to go with the Sea'Scape because of the exclusive tours and the price. Nowhere else on the Outer Banks can you get a private tour for three hours at this price! We didn't know exactly what to expect as neither my boyfriend or I had been sailing before. Dan and Katherine got us out on the water early and we returned later than expected which was fantastic! We heeled at around 25 degrees at one point in the cruise which felt more like 45 degrees and proved to be exhilarating! Dan and Katherine were extremely friendly and hospitable, allowing us to sail the boat and teaching us the basics of sailing as well as just having a friendly chat! I will definitely sail with the Bottjens again and spread the word on this fantastic experience!

I planned a surprise sunset sail and am SO GLAD I chose them! The were wonderful from the moment we stepped on the docks! Katherine brought us our drinks up on the bow, she even helped me cut and serve the cheese and crackers with the champagne! Highly recommend the Sunset Cruise! They let us man the helm and even wear the Captain's hat!! :) Thanks again, you two, it was awesome!!

My sister and I chartered Sea'Scape for a sunset sail on Roanoke Sound. The crew Dan & Katherine went out of their way to make the cruise a lovely experience. We saw dolphins and a lovely sunset cruising along the coast. This seems to be the most logical way to see the shoreline as they pointed out all the relevant sights. It was a very relaxing sail as the sound seems to be very calm and shallow. As a frequent sailor I think they did a great job!

Katherine and Dan are so great. They make you feel instantly at home the minute you board and then continue to wait on you the whole day! We sat on the bow some of the time and Katherine would happily bring us our drinks from below. We managed to see dolphins and Dan was more than happy to bring the boat around several times so we could get the best of it. The most awesome part of the day, however, was they insist you take the helm, even letting me sail the boat almost into port under power. It was extremely exhilarating. It was definitely the BEST day of our holiday. This is the best in the OBX. Thank you so much Dan and Katherine for a wonderful, wonderful, memorable day and we hope to see you again soon.

Our family wanted a unique way to help my husband celebrate his 60th birthday. Our sailing experience couldn't have been more perfect! Dan & Katherine warmly welcomed us from the moment we met them. They pointed out landmarks of interest along the way and each aspect of sailing was explained as we made our way into the sound. The weather cooperated as well as we were able to sail under total wind power for most of the three hours we were out. My husband got some sailing tips at the helm and was able to guide the sailboat under Dan's direction. The day couldn't have gone better. By the end of the cruise, we felt as though we had known Dan and Katherine as long-time friends. Their attention to detail made our sailing cruise a very memorable one. My girlfriend and I highly recommend this trip! Especially for anyone new to sailing (or boating in general!)! This was my fourth time on a boat (ever!), but the most intimate of my experiences in any body of water. Our guides--Katherine and Capt. Dan--were very hospitable, possessed a great sense of the area, and expressed an admirable love for sailing. On this trip I learned many things about boating life, the varieties of sailboats and how our particular sailboat (a ketch!) functions. I ALSO GOT TO STEER FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE TRIP!! The weather was perfect, the Albemarle Sound turned out to be a great location for sunset pictures, and Manteo just seems like the perfect castoff point. Cool experience, nice people, great memory! Plan to return!

Just returned from a week long vacation at outer banks and the private sunset sailing was unanimously the highlight of the trip, I think partly because six of us (three couples) decided to leave the kids with grandparents and made this an adults night out, the boat can accommodate six people regardless age. Dan and Katherine were easy to work with, they checked and monitor radar frequently and are very accommodating if changes were needed due to weather change, very pleasant host. The water was calm and weather in the high 70s was perfect for sailing, there is hardly any other boats around which makes it more relaxing, we brought wine, food, ditched our shoes, laid down to gaze at the blue sky, totally relax and unique experience. Would recommend go with people you know, sharing the tight space with strangers can be awkward.

We spent a magical morning aboard Dan and Katherine's beautiful sailboat. We had our two grown up children with us on our week's vacation to the Manteo area and wanted something memorable to do for my 50th birthday. Dan and Katherine are wonderful people and have a great passion for what they do. They make you feel at home as soon as you board. The weather was lovely (although apparently more wind would have been even better) and we took turns in steering the boat. My son volunteered to help out with the sails while the rest of us chose just to laze around and admire the scenery. As you can tell, we loved it and we will be back for more. If you are thinking about doing it, 'Just do it!', you won't regret it!

Great trip for 3 generations. Although the wind was light, on several occasions we encountered dolphins next to the boat. The girls loved steering and watching the navigation screen to see where we'd been and were headed. Dan and Katherine were wonderful hosts, the boat is in wonderful condition, and we had a great time.
Highly recommended - we'd do it again.

The first word that comes to mind is "WOW", this was truly the best day of my family's week long vacation to the Outer Banks. We found Dan and Katherine online, called on a Sunday and booked a Monday sunset charter. From the moment we stepped on their beautiful 41 foot two masted ketch we were awestruck. Their boat is pristine, they were great hosts and story tellers. Once we were clear of the channel Dan turned the helm over to me and then to my 17 year old son who was blown away by the experience, while my wife and Katherine chatted away about the sights. It's not often that everyone agrees what their best day was, especially on vacation, but we all agreed it was our best day. We could not thank them enough for their hospitality and will always treasure the experience. We would definitely do this again and plan to on our return next year. All I can say is whether you sail or not this is one of the best experiences you will ever have.

From start to finish this was an excellent experience.
My siblings and I wanted to organize a romantic 'date' for our parents during our week long vacation to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Katherine promptly answered all email/phone inquiries, providing all the information we would need to plan a memorable night for our parents.
Dan and Katherine met us at the dock where we sent our parents off. We knew right away that they would have an amazing evening. As happy as both our parents looked to be surprised with this 'date', they were beaming when they returned shortly after sunset. Dan and Katherine, both Captain and Crew, provided a comfortable and informative trip as only an endearing and genuine couple could.
Our parents cannot stop talking about their 'date' and all of the professional and personal touches provided by Dan and Katherine.

This was the best of the best! Dan and Katherine are awesome and quite knowledgeable on the surrounding area. Just being able to sit back and relax and enjoy the sunshine and bask in the sun and listen to the sounds of the water was so enjoyable! This was a learning experience as well when all of us were able to take our turn at sailing this beautiful vessel - wow! This is a must do for the whole family - guarantee you will enjoy!! Dan and Katherine are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and gracious hosts. From the moment we stepped on the boat we felt like we were home and it was a fantastic way to end our vacation. Dan and Katherine were such gracious hosts on our sunset sailing this week. It was the 6 of us, including our 9 month old grandson. We had some anxiety about taking him and still being a great trip for all. We should not have been concerned. Katherine kicked in as a grandma when needed, and we truly felt as if we were all one family. Dan included those who wished to help, including "piloting" the sailboat for awhile.
This was the best sailing experience that we have done on vacation, which included the Outer Banks, Naples, Charleston, and Aruba.
Dan and Katherine truly made us feel like one big happy family, and not "another customer". Thanks!

We sailed with Dan and Katherine on their beautiful 41 ft sailboat on July 4th. Six of us ranging in age from 15-78 had the time of our lives. I always ask my family after a vacation what their favorite thing was and every one of us listed this sail adventure. It is a wonderful way to see and learn the area (both Dan and Katherine are very knowledgeable). They made us feel right at home and took care of everyone's needs throughout the trip; answering questions, finding dolphins for the kids, and taking me back 20 yrs to when I sailed as a kid. Do this!

We took a sunset sail with Dan & Katherine on 5/26/12 with our friends who live nearby. It was just the four of us with Dan & Katherine. It was one of the best experiences we have ever had. After being raised on the Gulf Coast cruising motor vessels then serving a few years in the US Coast Guard, I reluctantly set this up for my wife who had pretty much nosea going experience. Dan and his mate did a fine job of providing a custom tour that was enjoyable for both my wife and I. An hour into the tour my wife was at the helm and Dan was educating me on the sails. My whole attitude on sailing craft changed that day. This is a 'must do' for anyone.

This was an amazing way to spend an evening. I had never been sailing before so my new bride and I decided to take a sunset cruise. I could not recommend this more. Dan & Katherine were very warm and welcoming. They didn't give off that canned feeling you get from some attractions. They truly loved sharing their passion and experience. I was wandering around like a little kid, grinning from ear to ear. Dan even let me take the helm for a good portion of the trip. This brought back many fond memories of fishing with my grandfather in Michigan. Overall this trip is a must do for anyone who visits.

What a wonderful way to spend several hours on the water. It was so nice to have the boat just for our party of three. Katherine and Dan shared so much information about the area, the local businesses and just facts about sailing in general. To our delight we saw dolphins! There were as many as a dozen swimming and playing all around us. Dan stopped the boat and we were able to sit and watch them play until they moved on. Dan and Katherine were so warm and inviting it was like spending time with old friends. They allowed us to pilot the boat which was a lot of fun. Normally I am nervous and uneasy around water but Katherine and Dan put me at ease and I was able to relax and enjoy the whole experience.

I knew I was going to propose to my then girlfriend on a trip to Nags Head in March. I communicated with Dan and Katherine beforehand and they knew about the plan and they couldn't have made it a more memorable experience. Katherine was even nice enough to bring a bouquet of flowers for her.
We took the sunset cruise and can't recommend it enough. It was before DST, so we left the dock around 3:45 and returned just before the sun slipped below the tree line. As cliche' as it might sound, you forget about everything else when they unfurl the sails.
The only regret I have about the trip is, we didn't spend more time sailing. My next trip will be longer than 3 hours.

My husband has always had a dream of sailing one day. For his birthday in April, 2012 we wanted to make that dream come true and we were so lucky to find Dan & Katherine. First of all, this is a private cruise. You have the boat for your enjoyment. Dan & Katherine were so warm and welcoming, we felt we were with friends. They gave us a tour of their beautiful sailboat and also gave us a couple lessons. My husband even got to steer the helm! He was in heaven! The chance to see the sun setting in the outer banks on your own private cruise with only your loved ones and the ship's crew (Dan & Katherine) is just priceless. You will want to keep coming back. I know we will!!

We thoroughly enjoyed the sunset cruise on August 9, 2011. Dan and Katherine were welcoming hosts; we felt at home on the boat. Upon arrival we toured the boat with Katherine, stowed our provisions and then were on our way. We cruised for about 3 1/2 hours, most of it under sail. The weather cooperated and there was a glorious sunset over the sound. Sail the Outer Banks limits participants on a Sea'Scape cruise to those in your party, so you have a private cruise. The boat was comfortable and we were encouraged to explore. I was able to take the helm for a good portion of the trip and managed to miss the crab pots. We felt that this cruise was a good value and we would do it again.
